Hungary, Władisław II, Double Goldgulden (Florin) ND (1491) N-, Nagybanya Mint, Gold, (7.09g), Lengyel -- (Die parings 77/2 and 77/2A for Goldgulden, similar dies), Fr-31 (For Goldgulden), Once in a life time opportunity to acquire such a piece! Much remaining lustre and very attractive in hand! NGC AU55, UNIQUE according to the Hungarian National Museum (HNM) Any bidders on this coin would have to provide solid references or provide a 10% advance deposit on the desired bidding amount.

Double florin of Wladislaw II, Nagybánya, no date (1491)

Despite the fact that Hungarian gold coinage began in 1325, we hardly know any multiple-weight gold florins from the late Middle Ages, as their heyday came only in the 16th–17th centuries. During the 26-year reign of King Władisław II of Hungary (1490 – 1516), only one multiple-weight gold florin has been known so far. The piece kept in the Coin Cabinet of the Hungarian National Museum (HNM) was minted in Nagybánya in 1512. The unique – i.e. known in only one copy – double gold florin featured in the current auction, was also struck in the mint of Nagybánya coin, but much more earlier. Although this piece is without date, based on its mint-mark, could have been minted in 1491. This specimen was in Budapest in 2024, when we subjected it to a thorough examination together with the late László Nudelman, the famous and excellent numismatist and coin dealer, the only Hungarian member of the AINP. We compared it with the specimen of HNM and concluded that the piece is undoubtedly original and authentic. In addition, we found a single gold florin struck with the same die in the collection of HNM.
All in all, the double gold florin now being auctioned is an unpublished, unique, original and authentic specimen, one of the rarest pieces of medieval Hungarian gold coinage.
